Why Sustainability Matters in Fiordland
Protecting the Place We Call Home
Nestled beside the shores of Lake Te Anau and on the edge of Fiordland National Park, sustainability is more than a trend for us — it is part of everyday life.
At Fiordland Lakeview Motel and Apartments we are fortunate to live and work in one of the most remarkable natural environments in the world. Towering mountains, ancient rainforests, pristine lakes and native wildlife make Fiordland a place unlike anywhere else.
Because of this, we believe tourism should not only protect this environment but also help regenerate it for future generations.
Sustainability at Fiordland Lakeview Motel and Apartments
As a family-owned accommodation provider in Te Anau, we are always looking for ways to reduce our environmental impact while still providing a comfortable and relaxing stay for our guests.
Reducing Waste – We encourage recycling and composting throughout the property. Guest food waste is placed into our worm farm, producing natural compost used in our gardens.
Eco-Friendly Cleaning – Our rooms are cleaned using biodegradable, plant-derived cleaning products with natural ingredients such as tea tree.
Native Tree Planting – Guests who decline room servicing help support native tree planting, with $10 donated per room to Whitestone Riverview Farm.
Reducing Plastic – All drinking water at the motel is filtered, providing fresh high-quality drinking water directly from taps in guest rooms. Tanara rooms also offer reusable bottles to reduce single-use plastic.
Energy Efficiency – LED lighting, timers and energy-efficient appliances are used throughout the property.
Regenerative Tourism – Giving Back
Regenerative tourism goes beyond sustainability by aiming to leave a place better than we found it.
In Fiordland this can mean supporting conservation initiatives, protecting native wildlife habitats and choosing locally owned businesses that invest back into the community.
At Fiordland Lakeview Motel and Apartments we support this approach through waste reduction, tree planting initiatives and encouraging responsible travel practices.
A Community Working Toward the Same Goal
Many tourism operators in Te Anau and Fiordland share a strong commitment to sustainability and conservation.
Local experiences including trips to Milford Sound, Doubtful Sound, guided walks and nature experiences are increasingly designed to minimise environmental impact while educating visitors about the importance of protecting the region.
How Visitors Can Help Protect Fiordland
Visitors can play an important role by following Leave No Trace principles, staying on marked tracks, recycling and composting where possible, reducing plastic waste and supporting locally owned businesses.
How Your Stay Helps the Environment
